Aston Villa News: Agbonlahor fumes at incident that cost them v West Ham

Gabriel Agbonlahor has been left fuming over VAR as he claimed it cost Aston Villa at least a point against West Ham last night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the legendary former Villa striker claimed Ollie Watkins should have been given the benefit of the doubt after his late equaliser was ruled out for offside.

The 24-year-old’s arm was adjudged to be offside as he broke free from the grasp of Hammers defender Angel Ogbonna to finish.

An alternative angle showed that Watkins was potentially fouled by the Italian but VAR did not review the decision.

Villa boss Dean Smith said after the game: “It was just wrong. That is the easiest way to describe it.”

Asked by Football Insider what he made of the VAR decision, Agbonlahor said: “I was doing the game on Sky Sports News and when the lines came out I said to the presenter ‘I don’t know how they’re going to call it here’.

“I feel like you’ve got to give the benefit of the doubt to the striker and looking at it, he looked exactly level with the defender. Watkins isn’t ahead of the defender.

“If they’re going to give it as offside, they’ve got to look at the foul. It’s a penalty on Watkins.

“It’s gone against Aston Villa and if you look at the game, VAR has cost them a point at least.”

Villa have now won just one of their last five Premier League games after starting the season with five consecutive victories, including a 7-2 triumph over last season’s champions Liverpool.

They now sit in 10th position, three points behind the top four, with a game in hand over the majority of the teams above them.
