Alan Hutton has revealed his shock after Bournemouth dealt Aston Villa a blow to their survival hopes by beating Leicester City on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa defender admits the Cherries’ stunning 4-1 win was a kick in the teeth after the Villans’ 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
Villa had leapfrogged Eddie Howe’s men in the battle for survival on Sunday before slipping back down to 19th place.
Relegation rivals Watford and West Ham also picked up three points over the weekend, leaving Dean Smith and his side four points off safety.
Hutton admits that after such a positive performance and result against Palace, Bournemouth’s result will have brought the players crashing back down to earth.
Hutton told Football Insider: “I couldn’t believe it, if I’m honest. I was sitting there thinking it’s been a good day, excellent performance, confidence is high.
“Leicester, chasing top-four, surely they’ll go and put in a performance and then they get beat 4-1, argh, I couldn’t believe it. It’s one of those things you can’t rely on people around you, especially at this stage of the season.
“It’s all about what Villa do. It can be a blow but ultimately it’s the same games and it’s up to you to get the points on the board – they haven’t done. You have to be positive, you can’t look at it negative or you will struggle.”
Villa have just three games left to play this season, starting with a trip to Everton on Thursday evening.
Bournemouth face Manchester City on Wednesday, while West Ham and Watford face off against each other on Friday.
