Aston Villa could U-turn on Tyrone Mings plan after source’s reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has backed Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings to establish himself as a key player under Unai Emery.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker said “everyone is on trial” now that a new manager has come in.

Mings endured an indifferent time under previous manager Steven Gerrard, losing the captain’s armband at the beginning of the season.

Sources have told Football Insider (28 October) that the Midlands club are in the market for a left-sided centre-half ahead of January.

It casts fresh doubt over the Mings’ long-term future at the club.

The 29-year-old’s contract runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Mings’ future, McAvennie said: “When a new manager comes in, everyone is on trial.

“That will be the case at Villa now.

“Players like Mings have from now until January to prove to Emery that they are worth being a part of his team. The players need to prove themselves in training over the next couple of weeks before the World Cup. It is as simple as that.

“Mings is a very good player but sometimes his concentration lets him down. He has not had the best time with managers either. That cannot have been good for him.

“Emery is a great manager. I think he might take a liking to Mings. It is a fresh start. It could be good for the boy.”
