Alan Hutton admits he understands why Callum O’Hare has turned down the opportunity to stay at Aston Villa when his contract runs out this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa defender believes the attacking midfielder is at an age where he has got to be playing regular football.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Villans have made multiple attempts to extend the 22-year-old’s contract but he has knocked back their efforts.
Having struggled to break into the first-team setup at Villa Park, O’Hare has been sent on loan to Carlisle United and Coventry City in the past year-and-a-half.
Hutton believes that the Villa youth graduate has now got a taste for first-team football and that he does not see a future for himself at his boyhood club.
Hutton told Football Insider: “Look, I think he’s a really good talent. Whether he would have broke in next year and obviously he also knows that.
“He’s getting to an age now where I think he has to play, there are people his age and younger that are playing week in, week out. He’s went on and got that feeling of playing every week and probably being loved and being one of the main men.
“He wants to continue that and grow as a player. From his point of view, of course I understand – it’s difficult leaving Villa, it’s his boyhood club, it’s always going to be tough but I think there comes a time in your career where you have to make a tough decision and that time is now.”
O’Hare has played just nine times for Villa’s senior side to date, with his last appearance coming in January 2019.
He has been a regular for Coventry City this season, missing just one league game to help the Sky Blues to promotion from League One.
