Darren Bent has been left baffled by the potential prospect of Aston Villa assistant head coach John Terry becoming the next Derby County manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Villa and Derby striker claimed taking over a Rams side bottom of the Championship is not the right first step for his former England teammate.

The Daily Mail report that both Derby and West Brom would be keen on offering Terry his first managerial job if they sack their current managers.

This site revealed last week that Rams boss Phillip Cocu was set for showdown talks with the club after their torrid start to the season.

They have won just one of their first 11 games and currently sit two points from safety.

Asked by Football Insider if he could see Terry replacing Cocu at Pride Park, Bent said: “I can see him being a manager, but not yet.

“Derby are rock bottom of the Championship and they’ve got Cocu who is an experienced manager.

“We’re talking about a guy in John Terry who this will be his first managerial job and his task is to get them off the bottom of the table.

“I don’t quite understand it, I don’t get it, for me, it’s a bit of a weird one.

“I’m all for people getting opportunities and I think John Terry will get his opportunity but I don’t think this is the right one for him at the moment.”

Terry has served as Villa assistant head coach since the appointment of current manager Dean Smith in October 2018.

The former Chelsea captain ended his playing career the previous season after spending a campaign with the Midlands club.
