Bent reacts to change of sporting director

Darren Bent admits it is no surprise that Jesus Garcia Pitarch has been replaced as Sporting Director at Aston Villa.

The former Villa and England ace, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, blasted the “absolutely awful” recruitment at Villa Park last summer.

The Villans confirmed on Thursday that Johan Lange has taken over as the club’s Sporting Director after the departure of Jesus Garcia Pitarch earlier in the week.

The Spaniard, who arrived at Villa Park in 2018 alongside manager Dean Smith and was responsible for much of the club’s recruitment ahead of the Premier League return.

Bent insists that Villa need a complete overhaul after scraping their way to survival and insists Pitarch needed the go.

Bent told Football Insider: “Their recruitment last summer was awful so I’m not surprised he got the chop because it was absolutely awful.

“The centre-forward, Wesley, had a tough time and hardly scored any goals. Samatta’s come in, hardly scored any goals, they’ve struggled in areas and they’ve lacked real depth in quality.

“You’ve got to say who’s picking these players up, who’s saying these players will succeed at Aston Villa? It’s not been very good so I’m not surprised that’s the case. Villa need a real overhaul.”

The Villans reportedly spent over £100million on over a dozen signings last summer but to mixed results.

Douglas Luiz, Tom Heaton and Ezri Konsa have been standout performers but the likes of Marvelous Nakamba and Jota have struggled to impress.
