Campbell ‘shocked’ by Bailey controversy missed by BBC cameras at Aston Villa

Kevin Campbell is “shocked” the officials failed to penalise Lisandro Martinez for elbowing Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said Martinez, 24, “should not be allowed to get away with” such actions.

As shown on journalist Ashley Preece’s Twitter (7 November), Martinez threw two elbows towards Bailey’s stomach in the second half of Man United’s 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

The Man United centre-half was not penalised for his actions, much to the dismay of Bailey.

Writing on Twitter after the game (7 November), the Aston Villa forward criticised the officials for failing to spot or punish Martinez’s actions.

Bailey said he “couldn’t breathe” after the coming together but was told by the linesman not to complain.

When asked by Football Insider if Martinez should have been punished for his actions, Campbell said: “The days of these sorts of actions are over.

“You should not be allowed to get away with that. I am shocked that nobody picked up on it.

“That is dangerous whether you like it or not. You cannot do that on a football pitch.

“I am really surprised the officials did not act because I guarantee certain other players would have been highlighted.

“I have no problem with being physical but elbowing people like that… There is no place for it. Why is he being allowed to get away with it?”
