‘He Pushed Him’ – Ex-Fifa referee drops verdict on two Aston Villa v Leicester controversies

Leicester City did not deserve a penalty during the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee delivered his verdict on two controversial incidents at Villa Park.

Leicester first appealed for a penalty when Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall and Douglas Luiz challenged for a loose ball just inside the penalty area, as shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme.

Dewsbury-Hall went to ground right in front of Michael Oliver who waved away appeals for a spot-kick.

There was also calls for a penalty when goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Tyrone Mings challenged for a header late on as Leicester searched for an equaliser.

It appeared Mings may have elbowed Schmeichel but Hackett dismissed calls for a penalty.

He said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think it was a penalty kick for the challenge on Dewsbury-Hall. I think the referee got that one right.

“The one at the end on Schmeichel was also a no. Schmeichel is up there, he is now effectively an outfield player.

“If you look at the clip, his arms and hands are exaggerated by his gloves. You see him put the first push in. He put the push in so I’m not giving a penalty kick for that.

“Concentrate on being a goalkeeper.”

Leicester are now winless in their last six Premier League games.

The result at Villa Park leaves Steven Gerrard’s side one place above the Foxes in the Premier League table on goal difference.
