Frank McAvennie is adamant Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was right to give John McGinn the captaincy for next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham and Villa striker believes the 27-year-old’s vocal nature is what earned him the new role.
On 27 July, the club confirmed that McGinn has been handed the captaincy at Villa Park.
The Scotland international takes over captaincy duties from Tyrone Mings.
The Villans begin their season at home to Everton on Saturday.
When asked by Football Insider as to why McGinn was named the new captain, McAvennie said: “Heās a hungry player, heās like an old fashioned player.
“People donāt shout at each other anymore. But McGinn, when people lose the ball, heās always shouting at them. Heās vocal and you need that.
“I think you need that in a captain. I think Gerrard sees McGinn as that kind of player and quite rightly so.

“Iāve met him a couple of times and heās a good lad. Heāll do that talking, he wonāt be slow in letting people know if they arenāt pulling their weight and I think you need that.
“Iām delighted for him. A lot of people canāt handle the captaincy but McGinn will handle it with ease. Heās that kind of player, heāll get about his business, heāll help people through the game because heās an experienced pro now so I think itās a good decision.“
