Mills tips Ollie Watkins to leave Brenftord after update

Danny Mills has tipped Aston Villa target Ollie Watkins to be given the green light to leave Griffin Park this summer after Brentford completed the signing of Ivan Toney.

The former Leeds and Manchester City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggests the deal will start a “domino effect” of transfers, one of which could be Watkins, 24, moving to Villa Park.

Brentford confirmed the signing of Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney on Monday who had been the subject of interest from Rangers, Celtic and West Brom earlier in the window.

Football Insider revealed last week that the £9million deal has opened the door for potential suitors of Watkins.

The centre-forward scored an impressive 26 goals in 49 appearances Championship appearances last season but missed out on promotion through the play-offs.

When asked by Football Insider if he expected Brentford to sanction the sale of Watkins after the arrival of Toney, Mills said: “We are always waiting for the domino effect.

“Clubs sometimes dig their heels in and will only let a player go once they have got in a replacement. Clubs cannot leave themselves bare and open.

“Brentford knew that people are going to come looking for Watkins and now that they have brought in Ivan Toney they can, if the deal is right, allow Watkins to leave.”

The Claret and Blue are keen to bolster their front line with the addition of Watkins, a player that Villa boss Dean Smith knows from their time together at Griffin Park during the 2017/2018 campaign.

Football Insider has been told that Leeds, Fulham, Sheffield United, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Brighton have also registered their interest in the English striker.
