Pundit ‘Very Surprised’ by Aston Villa controversy in last 48 hrs – ‘It Makes No Sense To Me’

Paul Robinson is baffled by referee Michael Oliver denying Leicester City a penalty against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England goalkeeper called the decision “nonsensical” and could not understand why it was not flagged up by VAR.

As shown on BBC Match of the Day (5 December), Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz appeared to stand on Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall’s foot in the penalty area.

The incident would prove a decisive moment in the match with Steven Gerrard’s side eventual 2-1 winners over the Foxes.

It was one of two controversial moments at Villa Park on Sunday.

Oliver, 36, also ruled out a goal for Jacob Ramsey after he deemed Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to be in control of the ball.

Robinson claimed the decisions probably evened themselves out in the end.

“I’m very surprised the Luiz challenge didn’t go to VAR,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“When you look at that and the Ramsey goal that was disallowed. They probably evened themselves out but that shouldn’t be how it works.

“Luiz stood on his foot a bit like how Fred stood on David de Gea’s foot.

“If you look at that you wonder what the guidelines for clear and obvious are. It makes no sense to me.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s win was Gerrard’s third in four games since joining the club.

The Claret and Blue sit 10th in the Premier League table.
