Graeme Souness believes it’s too early to suggest Steven Gerrard’s job as Aston Villa boss is under threat, but the pressure is on.
Gerrard was appointed as Villa boss following a bad run of results under predecessor Dean Smith.
But the Liverpool legend hasn’t been able to hit the ground running, winning just 11 of his 31 matches in charge of the club.
A defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend leaves Villa 13th in the Premier League with three points on the board and there have been suggestions Gerrard’s time at the helm could be running out.
Souness doesn’t believe it’s got to that stage, but said ‘the clock has started’ on Gerrard due to the amount Villa have already spent this summer.
But the former Reds player and manager admitted Gerrard’s association with Liverpool makes him somewhat reluctant to hand out criticism to him.
When asked about criticising Gerrard at Villa, Souness told talkSPORT: “I’m reluctant to. I have to be honest and say I would be reluctant.
“But I think right now it’s very early to start criticising Steven Gerrard.
“The clock is ticking on him though, let’s say that. The clock has started on him because of the results and because they’ve spent money.
“I don’t know Steven very well, I’ve met him a few times. I suppose it’s through the allegiance I have to Liverpool that I’d want to protect him for a wee bit.”
Asked if Gerrard has the makings to be a top manager, Souness added: “I don’t know. Until you’ve worked with someone I don’t think you know.
“I don’t know what character you need [to succeed in management]… you need a slice of luck…”
